The Papuk Nature Park is located in the mountainous forest areas of Papuk, and was declared a nature park on April 23, 1999. In 2007, due to its valuable geological heritage, Papuk became part of the European and world association of geoparks and became the first geopark in Croatia – Geopark Papuk. The main feature of the eastern part of Croatia – Slavonia – are the lowland plains with large cultivated areas. From that plain, which was once the bottom of the Pannonian Sea, mountains rise almost a thousand meters above sea level. One of these mountains is Papuk – the most beautiful mountain in Slavonia. The geomorphological, climatic and vegetation characteristics of the Papuk Nature Park provide excellent natural habitats for numerous plant and animal species. Forest vegetation covers more than 96% of the area. The dominant tree species is beech. Almost all representatives of the Central European fauna live here, but 200 years ago this area was also inhabited by bears, wolves and lynxes. Today, the dense forests of Papuk are a habitat and refuge for deer, roe deer, wild boars, foxes and martens… Papuk also provides excellent habitats for many species of birds and is an internationally important area for birds. Ponor Uviraljka is an important wintering ground for bats. Almost 1,300 species of plants (more than a quarter of the entire Croatian flora) grow on Papuk. The most endangered and protected species of plants grow on grasslands and other non-forest areas.
